What is Floriography ?

Sending and receiving a beautiful bouquet of flowers is always a pleasant experience. Flowers are often associated with young, beauty, and pleasure as they blossom into full bloom from tender buds. They also represent life and death as they wilt and die. The language of flowers has been a practice for thousands of years in many cultures throughout Europe, Asia, and Africa. The use of special symbolism of flowers was prevalent during the Victorian Era. Flowers were primarily used to deliver messages that couldn't be spoken aloud. Today, we send and receive different flowers depending on the occasion. All flowers hold different meanings, which are often based on the type or color of the flower. And floriography is the art of communicating through different flower types.

We want to express the idea of floriography on us by exploring the relationship between humans and the language of flowers. Inspired by the art of combining flowers and faces, we aim to replicate this artwork to represent the life cycle of flowers and the dialogue with human faces. Using two different 3D scanning machines, we combined the scanned objects of various flowers and faces in Rhino. By manipulating mesh vectors in two ways: transforming vectors on face meshes into lines with different lengths based on the vector point’s distance to another point within the bounding box side and enlarging the size of vectors on flowers to mimic the blossoming process. Finally, we combine these two effects to showcase the flower blossoms happening on human faces, which indicates the beauty of life and growth.

"Flowers bring a touch of eternity, joy, and beauty which lie beyond the sorrow and cares of the human world."
